Take the rewrite
A fixed version that keeps your meaning, ready to copy.
A spellchecker tells you the email is well-formed. It will not tell you that your ask is buried, that "per my last email" reads as hostile, or that nobody can tell what you want them to do next. Those are the things that actually decide whether you get a reply.
This checker reads the whole email the way a recipient would and grades it on clarity, tone, structure, how specific the ask is, and mechanics. Then it gives you the rewrite, so you are not left knowing something is wrong without knowing how to fix it.
Eight rules that cover most of it. If you only take one, take the first.
Most people read the first two lines on a phone and decide whether to deal with it now or later. If your request is in paragraph four, you have made that decision for them, and the answer is later.
"Quick question" and "Touching base" tell the reader nothing and are unfindable in search six months later. "Invoice 4021 - approval needed by Friday" does the whole job.
Three requests in one email reliably gets you one answer. If you genuinely need three things, number them, or send separate emails on separate threads.
"Let me know your thoughts" asks the reader to compose an opinion. "Can you approve this by Thursday?" asks for a yes or a no. The second gets answered.
If they wrote "Hi Sam, thanks!" then "Dear Mr Taylor, I trust this email finds you well" reads as cold or sarcastic. Mirror the register they set.
Reply-all when every recipient needs the information to act. "Thanks!" to fourteen people is not that. CC is for information; To is for people who owe you something.
Write it, then leave it in drafts for an hour. Email has no tone of voice, so mild irritation reads as hostility. Anything genuinely difficult belongs in a call.
Every work email is one click from an inbox you did not intend. Write as though the person you are describing will read it, because sometimes they do.
The same message, sent badly and sent well. The pattern in every pair is the same: replace the implied complaint with a concrete next step.
Per my last email, I am still waiting on this.
Following up on the budget approval - do you need anything else from me to sign it off?
URGENT!!! Please respond ASAP
Needs a decision by Thursday 5pm to make the print deadline.
Just wondering if you had any thoughts on the thing we discussed?
Are we going with option B for the launch page? Happy to proceed if so.
Sorry to bother you again, I know you're really busy, but if you have a minute...
One quick thing when you have a moment:
As previously discussed, this was supposed to be done last week.
This one has slipped past last week's date - what would help get it moving?
With a colleague, bad etiquette costs you a slow reply. With a stranger, it costs you the whole conversation: they have no reason to decode a vague email from someone they have never met, so they just do not answer.
Emailchaser sends cold email campaigns from your own mailbox, with follow-ups that stop the moment someone replies. Get the first email right and the sequence does the rest.
What is email etiquette?
The set of conventions that make work email readable and not annoying: a clear subject line, a greeting, the point in the first two lines, a specific ask, and a sign-off. Get those right and almost everything else is detail.
What are the main rules of email etiquette?
Put the ask in the first two lines. Use a subject line that says what the email is about. Keep it under 200 words where you can. Name a specific next step rather than "let me know your thoughts". Reply-all only when everyone actually needs it. Never write anything you would not want forwarded.
How does the etiquette checker score my email?
It grades five things: clarity (is the point obvious early), tone, structure, specificity of the ask, and mechanics like spelling and formatting. You get a score out of 100, a letter grade, a list of the specific problems, and a rewrite that fixes them.
Is my email stored or used for training?
No. Your email is sent to our server, scored, and returned. It is not saved to a database and not used to train anything. Still, do not paste anything genuinely confidential into any online tool, including this one.
What is bad email etiquette?
The common ones: a vague subject line ("Quick question"), burying the ask in paragraph four, marking things urgent that are not, passive-aggressive phrasing ("per my last email", "as previously discussed"), replying all to a 40-person thread, and writing a five-paragraph email when two sentences would do.
How long should a work email be?
Under 200 words for most things. Anything longer than about 250 words gets skimmed rather than read, and anything past 500 usually should have been a document or a call.
Is the email etiquette checker free?
Yes, with a fair-use limit of five checks per hour so it stays free for everyone. The other tools on this site run entirely in your browser with no limits at all.
