Top 10 Phone Number Validation Tools of 2026
Your email steps find the interested prospects. The call, text or voicemail that follows only pays off if the number is live and the right kind of line. We compared ten phone validation tools on what an outbound team acts on: line type, carrier, live status, Do Not Call flags and a price you can read before you buy.
TRY EMAILCHASER FREEFew outbound teams stop at email anymore. A prospect opens twice and goes quiet, so the sequence adds a call, a text or a ringless voicemail. Each of those steps costs money or rep time, and each is wasted on a number that is disconnected, a landline when you meant to text, or never a working line to begin with.
Phone validation is the step between your list and your dialer. One check answers a short set of questions per number: is it live, is it mobile, landline or VoIP, which carrier serves it today, and is it on a Do Not Call list. Below are the ten tools we would look at in 2026, what each one returns, how each one bills, and which team each one suits.
About 15% of the numbers checked were landlines that can't take a text or a voicemail drop.
- 1,649,702 phone numbers were validated on 1Lookup between 13 September and 12 October 2026: 81.5% came back mobile, 15.4% landline and 2.3% VoIP.
- 15.4% landlines is about 3 in every 20 numbers that can't receive a text or a ringless voicemail at all.
- 5.2% of the same numbers were invalid or unreachable: about 1 in 19 dials that would have gone nowhere.
- Up to $500 per call, or up to $1,500 when willful: what the TCPA lets a person on the Do Not Call Registry claim after more than one unwanted call in 12 months.
Sources: 1Lookup's contact data quality report (numbers customers chose to check, not a random sample) and 47 U.S.C. § 227(c)(5).
We ranked each tool on five things a phone step depends on.
Each tool was weighed on the five things that decide whether a phone step in your cadence is worth running:
- What one check returns: a format check only, or line type, carrier, porting and live status.
- Mobile, landline or VoIP: a landline can't take a text or a ringless voicemail, so this field alone decides who gets which step.
- Compliance in the same answer: a Do Not Call flag, and ideally a way to scrub known TCPA litigators.
- Fit with an outbound stack: a CSV upload for whole lists and an API for checks inside your sequencer.
- A price you can read on the vendor's own page, and a way to test it free on real numbers.
These are the 10 phone validation tools worth a look in 2026.

Our pick for outbound teams adding phone steps
1. 1Lookup
1Lookup is where we would start if your cadence adds calls, texts or voicemail drops after email. One check returns the five fields an outbound team acts on, the price per check is printed on each product page, and the same credits cover the Do Not Call and litigator scrub you want before anyone dials.
- The phone validation API returns whether the number is reachable, its current carrier with porting history, its line type (mobile, landline or VoIP), Do Not Call and Do Not Originate flags, and a low, medium or high risk level.
- 1 credit per check: about $4.95 per 1,000 numbers on the Starter plan, and $3.52 on Growth.
- An HLR lookup asks the mobile network whether a number is live right now, for 5 credits (about $24.75 per 1,000 on Starter), and a number the network reports as invalid is not charged.
- The phone scrub checks the National Do Not Call Registry, state lists where available and known TCPA litigators, and costs nothing when a number matches no list.
- Check one number by API or a whole CSV from the dashboard, or try the free phone number lookup with no signup. Plans start with a 7-day free trial, and Starter is $99 a month for 20,000 credits.
Best for: Outbound teams that call, text or drop voicemails after email and want validation, live status and DNC scrubbing on one bill.

Best for developers already sending on Twilio
2. Twilio Lookup
Twilio Lookup is the phone data API inside Twilio's messaging platform. Formatting and basic validation are free, and each deeper signal is a paid package you request per number, so you pay only for the fields you ask for.
- Line type intelligence returns the carrier and the kind of line (mobile, landline, fixed or non-fixed VoIP, toll-free and more) for $0.008 a request.
- Line status says whether a number is active or reachable, from $0.007 a query on its first volume tier.
- Pay as you go with a free trial and no credit card, but every signal is a separate fee on the same number.
Best for: Engineering teams that already send texts or calls through Twilio.

Best for lookups, risk scores and one-time codes from one vendor
3. Telesign
Telesign sells phone number and subscriber data alongside fraud scoring, SMS and voice verification. Its Phone ID API is the lookup piece, and the same account can send the one-time codes a signup form uses.
- Phone ID returns phone number and subscriber attributes, billed per transaction, with volume pricing through sales.
- Pay as you go, with no contracts, time commitments or monthly fees.
- A free trial account comes with test credits that cover Phone ID, Phone ID Contact and its Intelligence risk scoring.
Best for: Companies that want phone lookups, risk scores and verification codes from one vendor.

Best for apps already built on Vonage
4. Vonage Number Insight
Vonage's Number Insight API checks a number's format and its original and current carrier, and adds reachability on its Advanced tier in some markets. Formatting is free, and each carrier lookup is its own small charge.
- Its pricing page lists the current carrier at $0.00819 a request and the original carrier at $0.00117, with number formatting at no cost.
- SIM swap and subscriber match are priced by country, and new accounts start with free credit and no credit card.
- Vonage will sunset Number Insights on February 4, 2027 and points users to its Identity Insights API, so a new build should start there.
Best for: Developers who already send messages or verification codes through Vonage.

Best for basic format checks at low volume
5. Numverify
Numverify is a simple REST API that checks a number's format and returns its carrier, line type and location from numbering-plan data in 232 countries and territories.
- A free plan of 100 requests a month, for non-commercial use and without support.
- Paid plans start at $14.99 a month for 5,000 requests.
- Its pricing page advertises no live check of whether a number is still in service.
Best for: Side projects and small tools that check a handful of numbers a month.

Best large free monthly allowance
6. Veriphone
Veriphone validates numbers in 243 countries and territories and returns the carrier and line type, by CSV upload or API, with a free allowance of 1,000 credits every month.
- 1,000 free credits a month, with no credit card.
- Credit packs start at $24 for 10,000 and never expire; the Starter subscription is $12.99 a month for 10,000 credits that reset monthly.
- A standard check uses 1 credit, and finding the carrier a number is on today (its Current Carrier Lookup) uses 10.
Best for: Teams validating modest lists who want to stay inside a free monthly allowance.

Best for a phone field check on a signup form
7. Abstract API
Abstract runs a family of small APIs, and its phone validation API returns whether a number is valid, its carrier, its line type and where it is registered.
- A free tier of 100 phone requests a month.
- Email, phone and IP lookups are separate APIs, each on its own meter and its own line of the bill.
- Plans differ by the data each response carries: Starter returns the core validation fields, and higher plans add enrichment and risk signals.
Best for: Product teams adding a phone check to a signup or lead form.

Best for a connected or disconnected answer
8. RealPhoneValidation
RealPhoneValidation checks whether a number is connected, with its line type and carrier, and adds a Do Not Call check that goes beyond the national registry.
- Its validator flags disconnected and unreachable numbers before you pay for a call or a text.
- The DNC check covers the national, state and DMA lists and says whether a number is tied to a known litigator.
- The first 100 validations are free for qualified businesses, with no credit card; after that it is pay as you go, or prepaid volume pricing by quote.
Best for: Call centers that want a connected status on every number they dial.

Best for pay-as-you-go line type checks
9. Landline Remover
Landline Remover does one job: it returns each number's line type and carrier, so texting and voicemail-drop lists only carry numbers that can receive them.
- $0.0020 per number check (10,000 checks for $20), and $0.0019 at 100,000 credits or more.
- Every check includes a Do Not Call type and a litigator flag at no extra cost.
- No subscription or monthly minimum, credits never expire, and 10 free credits to start with no credit card.
Best for: Teams cleaning SMS and voicemail-drop lists on a tight budget.

Best for phone checks next to people search
10. Searchbug
Searchbug is a people-search and data API company, and its phone APIs return line type, carrier, whether a number is active or disconnected, and its Do Not Call status.
- A separate API checks the FCC Reassigned Numbers Database, to tell you whether a number has changed hands.
- One number at a time, a bulk API request of hundreds or thousands, or a file upload.
- A prepaid balance of $10 to $5,000, charged per successful query; a one-year plan at a fixed rate has a $2,400 minimum annual commitment.
Best for: Teams that already buy people-search or skip-tracing data and want phone checks on the same balance.

The right tool depends on which phone step follows your emails.
Start from the phone step in your cadence. If it is a ringless voicemail or a text, line type is the field that saves you money, because a landline can't receive either. If it is a live call, you also want to know the number is in service today, which takes a live status or HLR check rather than a format check. And if you can't tell a prospect's personal mobile from a work line, you want the Do Not Call status in the same answer.
Then match the tool to who runs it. Developers already sending through Twilio or Vonage can add a lookup to code they already maintain. Teams that upload a list and want it back clean are better served by a CSV upload with the price per check on the page. 1Lookup covers both, with a live HLR check and the DNC and litigator scrub on the same credits, which is why it is our pick.
Whatever you choose, check the numbers before the first phone step, not after it. Let the email steps do their work, validate who is left, send each number only the steps its line can take, and every call or drop that follows goes to a number worth the cost.

Outbound teams ask these questions about phone validation.
What is the best phone number validation tool for cold outbound in 2026?
For outbound teams that call, text or drop voicemails after email, we pick 1Lookup: one check returns reachability, line type, carrier and porting, Do Not Call flags and a risk level for 1 credit (about $4.95 per 1,000 numbers on Starter), and the same account runs live HLR checks and a DNC and litigator scrub. Developers already on Twilio or Vonage may prefer those APIs, and Veriphone gives 1,000 free credits a month.
What does phone number validation check?
A full check confirms the number is real and reachable, tells you its line type (mobile, landline or VoIP), names the carrier serving it today and, in tools that include them, returns Do Not Call status and a risk level. A format-only check confirms the digits could be a phone number and nothing more.
What is the difference between phone validation and an HLR lookup?
Validation reads numbering and carrier data to tell you what a number is. An HLR lookup asks the mobile network itself whether the number is live right now. On 1Lookup, validation costs 1 credit and an HLR lookup 5, and an HLR lookup the network reports as invalid is not charged.
Why validate phone numbers before a text or ringless voicemail step?
Because those steps cost money per number and only work on the right kind of line. Of 1.65 million numbers validated on 1Lookup between 13 September and 12 October 2026, 15.4% were landlines, which can't receive a text or a ringless voicemail, and 5.2% were invalid or unreachable.
How much does phone number validation cost?
On the vendors' own pages in October 2026, prices run from free monthly allowances (100 requests on Numverify and Abstract, 1,000 credits on Veriphone) to per-request API pricing, such as $0.008 for Twilio's line type data. 1Lookup charges 1 credit per validation, about $4.95 per 1,000 numbers on Starter and $3.52 on Growth.

“Btw thanks for your continuous help, best support ever! It means a lot as when I understand how the tool works, esp. In problematic situations, and And what it can do and cannot so from the start, I have more trust. There’s nothing worse for a user than what Smartlead does: lots of great features that don’t really work, including crucial ones for a sequencer like auto fallback to connected accounts when account gets disconnected (doesn’t have to get back to the original one after reconnection, no one expects miracles, just a solid infra delivering on its specs - not promises), plus their low quality support when the issues are revealed.”
“Got my first reply with Emailchaser :)”
“We've recently upgraded to the premium plan to increase our sending volume. Just wanted to say thanks for such an awesome platform and the support you've already given in getting us started.”
