Libero Mail SMTP, IMAP and POP3 settings

Libero is the free webmail attached to the Italian Libero portal, owned by Italiaonline, and it covers @libero.it, @iol.it, @inwind.it and @blu.it addresses. The hostnames are not the obvious ones: incoming is imapmail.libero.it or popmail.libero.it, outgoing is smtp.libero.it on port 465. Libero's anti-spam can also force your password to expire if a mailbox suddenly sends a lot, which blocks sending until you change it.

For incoming mail, use the IMAP server imapmail.libero.it on port 993, or POP3 at popmail.libero.it on port 995. Pick the exact values from the tool above and copy them straight into your mail client.

Checked against Libero Mail's own documentation: aiuto.libero.it. Ports and limits change, so check there too if something will not connect.

What to enter as your Libero Mail username and password

Wrong credentials, not a wrong port, are the usual reason a Libero Mail connection fails. These are the exact values to type.

Username

The full address including its domain, for example mario.rossi@libero.it

Password

Your normal Libero Mail password. If you have Password Sicura, Libero's two step verification, switched on, mail apps need a 16 character app specific password generated under Password per App instead

Get your password libero mail, or a 16 character password specifica per applicazioni if password sicura is on

How to set up Libero Mail in a mail client

The exact path through Libero Mail's own settings, in order.

  1. 1

Use IMAP on imapmail.libero.it, port 993

Security is SSL/TLS. Libero recommends IMAP so mail stays in step between its servers, the webmail and every device. The POP alternative is popmail.libero.it on port 995.

  2. 2

Set outgoing to smtp.libero.it, port 465

Security SSL/TLS and authentication required. Libero's guides list only port 465 for free mailboxes, so change any app that defaults to 587.

  3. 3

Enter the address in full as the username

Libero says always include the domain, so mario.rossi@libero.it rather than mario.rossi on its own. The same applies to @iol.it, @inwind.it and @blu.it.

  4. 4

Use your normal Libero Mail password, unless Password Sicura is on

With Password Sicura, Libero's two step verification, switched on you cannot use your ordinary password in a mail app: you generate a 16 character Password Specifica per Applicazioni under Password per App in the Account area and paste that instead. Without it, your normal Libero Mail password is what the client wants. Either way, change the password and you must update every client and the Libero Mail app too.

  5. 5

In Outlook, mirror the incoming settings for sending

Under File > Impostazioni account > Impostazioni server > Posta in uscita, leave SPA unticked and turn on 'Usa le stesse impostazioni del server della posta in arrivo'.

Which port should you use for Libero Mail?

SSL/TLS on 465 (recommended) or STARTTLS on 587.

587

STARTTLS

Starts as a plain connection, then upgrades to an encrypted one. The modern standard for sending.

465Recommended

SSL/TLS

Encrypted from the first byte. Widely supported and a good choice when 587 is blocked.

25Not supported

Plain SMTP

Meant for server-to-server relay. Home networks and cloud hosts block it, so do not use it to send from a client.

Why your Libero Mail connection is failing

The failures people actually hit with Libero Mail, and what fixes each one.

Errore 421, troppi destinatari

You have gone past Libero's cap of 50 recipients counting To, CC and BCC together. Break the message into batches of 50 or fewer.

Sending stops and your client shows a password warning out of nowhere

Libero's anti-spam can expire the password when a mailbox sends many messages in a short window. Sign in at login.libero.it, set a new password, then update it in every app and device.

Your correct Libero password is refused by Outlook or Thunderbird

If Password Sicura, Libero's two step verification, is switched on, your ordinary password will not work in a mail app. Generate a 16 character Password Specifica per Applicazioni under Password per App at account.libero.it and use that instead.

A custom domain mailbox will not connect to smtp.libero.it on 465

Mail Personal and Mail Business use their own servers: imap-biz.libero.it on 993, pop-biz.libero.it on 995, and smtp-biz.libero.it on port 587 with STARTTLS rather than 465.

A PEC mailbox rejects the standard Libero servers

Libero Mail PEC runs on mail.postacert.it.net for all three protocols, IMAP 993, POP3 995 and SMTP 465, not on any libero.it hostname.

Errore 500 utente sconosciuto, or errore 550

Both mean the recipient address does not exist. Libero ties 500 to a mistyped or non-existent address and 550 to a mailbox that is not there, so check the spelling and resend.

Libero Mail sending limits

Libero sets sending thresholds case by case rather than publishing a daily figure, and can expire the password instead of bouncing the mail; anything over 25 MB is pushed into DriveMail, which takes up to 2 GB.

Recipients per message

50, counting To, CC and BCC together

Max attachment

Libero Mail quirks by mail client

Outlook

Libero's own Outlook check tells you to untick SPA and switch on 'use the same settings as the incoming mail server' for outgoing authentication, under File > Impostazioni account > Impostazioni server > Posta in uscita.

Sending cold email through Libero Mail

Per-account daily caps apply on free Libero mailboxes. Authentication is required and the username is your full address, including the @libero.it (or @iol.it, @inwind.it, @blu.it) domain.

Those caps make single-mailbox sending fine for personal mail but a poor fit for cold outreach at volume. Emailchaser spreads sending across warmed inboxes and manages deliverability, so you can scale without burning Libero Mail accounts.

Other consumer email providers

Setting up more than one mailbox? These sit in the same category as Libero Mail.

Common questions about Libero Mail SMTP settings

What are Libero Mail's SMTP settings?

Libero Mail's outgoing (SMTP) server is smtp.libero.it. Use port 587 (STARTTLS) or 465 (SSL/TLS). SSL/TLS on 465 (recommended) or STARTTLS on 587. Sign in with your full email address and password (or app password).

What is Libero Mail's IMAP or POP3 server?

Libero Mail's incoming IMAP server is imapmail.libero.it on port 993 (SSL/TLS). If you prefer POP3, use popmail.libero.it on port 995.

Which port should I use for Libero Mail?

Use port 587 with STARTTLS wherever it's offered, it's the modern standard for authenticated sending. Port 465 with SSL/TLS is a solid alternative. Avoid port 25, which most networks block for client sending. Libero Mail's recommended value is above.

Why won't my Libero Mail SMTP connection work?

Check authentication first: Authentication is required and the username is your full address, including the @libero.it (or @iol.it, @inwind.it, @blu.it) domain. No app password. Use your Libero Mail password with authentication switched on. Then confirm the host, port and security method match exactly, a 587/SSL or 465/STARTTLS mismatch will fail to connect.

Can I send bulk or cold email through Libero Mail?

Not at scale. Per-account daily caps apply on free Libero mailboxes. Providers throttle bursts to fight spam, so pushing cold email through one mailbox hits limits and wrecks deliverability. High-volume outreach belongs on dedicated infrastructure that spreads sending across warmed inboxes, which is what Emailchaser does.

Why did Libero make me change my password when I had done nothing wrong?

Libero's anti-spam watches how fast a mailbox sends. If it sees many messages in a short window it can set a sending threshold and, in worse cases, expire the password as a precaution. You get an alert in the webmail, a popup, or a notification email if you use a client. Signing in at login.libero.it and setting a new password restores sending.

Do @iol.it, @inwind.it and @blu.it addresses use different servers?

No. All four Libero domains use the same imapmail.libero.it, popmail.libero.it and smtp.libero.it servers on the same ports. The only thing that changes is the username, which must be the full address with its own domain.

Do I need an app password for Libero?

Only if you have Password Sicura, Libero's two step verification, switched on. In that case a browser sign-in still uses your normal password, but any mail app or client needs a 16 character Password Specifica per Applicazioni, generated under Password per App in the Account area. Without Password Sicura, your ordinary Libero Mail password works in the client.
