Mail.ru SMTP, IMAP and POP3 settings

Mail.ru, branded as Mail, is a Russian free email service, and its sign-up form lets you pick the domain from mail.ru, internet.ru, bk.ru, inbox.ru or list.ru. Your normal mailbox password will not work in any mail client. Mail requires a separate password for external applications, you cannot create one until a phone number is linked to the account, and each password is scoped to what it may touch.

For incoming mail, use the IMAP server imap.mail.ru on port 993, or POP3 at pop.mail.ru on port 995. Pick the exact values from the tool above and copy them straight into your mail client.

Checked against Mail.ru's own documentation: help.mail.ru, account.mail.ru. Ports and limits change, so check there too if something will not connect.

What to enter as your Mail.ru username and password

Wrong credentials, not a wrong port, are the usual reason a Mail.ru connection fails. These are the exact values to type.

Username

Your full mailbox address, for example you@mail.ru or you@bk.ru

Password

A password for external applications generated in Mail's security settings. The ordinary mailbox password is refused.

How to set up Mail.ru in a mail client

The exact path through Mail.ru's own settings, in order.

  1. 1

Link a phone number to the account

Mail will not offer the external-application password screen until a phone number is attached. Check it under Контакты и адреса (Contacts and addresses) in settings and add one if it is missing.

  2. 2

Create a password for external applications

Go to Настройки > Все настройки > Безопасность > Пароли для внешних приложений, or straight to https://account.mail.ru/user/2-step-auth/passwords/, and click Создать (Create).

  3. 3

Choose what that password may reach

Mail asks you to pick the access type: full access to Mail, sending only in Mail, full access to Cloud or Calendar, or full access to all three. Pick full access to Mail if the client also has to download messages.

  4. 4

Enter the server settings in your client

IMAP: imap.mail.ru port 993 with SSL/TLS. POP3: pop.mail.ru port 995 with SSL/TLS. SMTP: smtp.mail.ru port 465 with SSL/TLS. The username is your full address and the password is the one you generated.

  5. 5

Turn on authentication for the outgoing server

Mail lists '503 Administrative prohibition - authorization required' as the error you get when the client is not set to authenticate against smtp.mail.ru, so tick that option before testing.

Thunderbird SMTP Server settings for Mail.ru: server name smtp.mail.ru, port 465, connection security SSL/TLS, authentication method normal password.

Which port should you use for Mail.ru?

SSL/TLS on 465 (recommended) or STARTTLS on 587.

587

STARTTLS

Starts as a plain connection, then upgrades to an encrypted one. The modern standard for sending.

465Recommended

SSL/TLS

Encrypted from the first byte. Widely supported and a good choice when 587 is blocked.

25Not supported

Plain SMTP

Meant for server-to-server relay. Home networks and cloud hosts block it, so do not use it to send from a client.

Why your Mail.ru connection is failing

The failures people actually hit with Mail.ru, and what fixes each one.

503 Administrative prohibition - authorization required

The outgoing server is not set to authenticate. Switch on authentication for smtp.mail.ru in the client and give it the same address and external-application password used for incoming mail.

Cannot sign in through the mail program although the password works at mail.ru

Mail states that entry with the regular mailbox password will not work. Create a password for external applications at Настройки > Все настройки > Безопасность > Пароли для внешних приложений and use that instead.

The screen for creating an external-application password is missing

Mail requires a phone number attached to the account first. Add and confirm one under Контакты и адреса, then the page at https://account.mail.ru/user/2-step-auth/passwords/ becomes usable.

Ratelimit exceeded for mailbox when sending

You have crossed Mail's hourly sending limit. Mail says to change your password and turn on two-factor authentication if you were not the one sending in bulk, and to register a domain with Postmaster Mail.ru for any real mailing rather than using a personal mailbox.

You lost the app password and cannot look it up anywhere

Mail says the password is stored nowhere and cannot be looked up. Create a new one, and update every device or program that was using the old one.

Mail.ru sending limits

Mail describes the sending cap only as a limit per hour without publishing the number, and the symptom of hitting it is the 'Ratelimit exceeded for mailbox' error.

Mail.ru quirks by mail client

Apple Mail

For a POP3 setup Mail's help says to enter a deliberately wrong password first so the device does not auto-configure IMAP, then set pop.mail.ru by hand.

The Bat! users hitting 'Невозможно соединиться с сервером' or 'Приветствие TLS не завершено' have an out-of-date protocol database, and Mail points them at The Bat! support for an update.

Sending cold email through Mail.ru

Per-account daily caps apply on free mailboxes. Mail.ru requires an app password for third-party clients: your normal password will not connect.

Those caps make single-mailbox sending fine for personal mail but a poor fit for cold outreach at volume. Emailchaser spreads sending across warmed inboxes and manages deliverability, so you can scale without burning Mail.ru accounts.

Other consumer email providers

Setting up more than one mailbox? These sit in the same category as Mail.ru.

Common questions about Mail.ru SMTP settings

What are Mail.ru's SMTP settings?

Mail.ru's outgoing (SMTP) server is smtp.mail.ru. Use port 587 (STARTTLS) or 465 (SSL/TLS). SSL/TLS on 465 (recommended) or STARTTLS on 587. Sign in with your full email address and password (or app password).

What is Mail.ru's IMAP or POP3 server?

Mail.ru's incoming IMAP server is imap.mail.ru on port 993 (SSL/TLS). If you prefer POP3, use pop.mail.ru on port 995.

Which port should I use for Mail.ru?

Use port 587 with STARTTLS wherever it's offered, it's the modern standard for authenticated sending. Port 465 with SSL/TLS is a solid alternative. Avoid port 25, which most networks block for client sending. Mail.ru's recommended value is above.

Why won't my Mail.ru SMTP connection work?

Check authentication first: Mail.ru requires an app password for third-party clients: your normal password will not connect. Create one under Password and Security > Passwords for external apps. Then confirm the host, port and security method match exactly, a 587/SSL or 465/STARTTLS mismatch will fail to connect.

Can I send bulk or cold email through Mail.ru?

Not at scale. Per-account daily caps apply on free mailboxes. Providers throttle bursts to fight spam, so pushing cold email through one mailbox hits limits and wrecks deliverability. High-volume outreach belongs on dedicated infrastructure that spreads sending across warmed inboxes, which is what Emailchaser does.

Why does my normal Mail password fail in Outlook or Thunderbird?

Mail blocks it deliberately. Its help states that entry into a mail program with the regular mailbox password will not work, and that you must create a password for external applications instead. Generate one at Настройки > Все настройки > Безопасность > Пароли для внешних приложений. Mail does not save the generated password anywhere, so copy it before you close the window.

I cannot find the app password screen at all. What is missing?

Almost always a phone number. Mail requires a phone number attached to the account before it will let you create a password for external applications, so check Контакты и адреса in settings first. Once the number is confirmed, the option appears under Безопасность. The direct link is https://account.mail.ru/user/2-step-auth/passwords/.

Do @bk.ru, @list.ru and @inbox.ru mailboxes use different servers?

No separate hostnames are documented. Mail's sign-up form offers mail.ru, internet.ru, bk.ru, inbox.ru and list.ru, and the mail-client help gives a single set of servers for Mail: imap.mail.ru, pop.mail.ru and smtp.mail.ru. Your username is the full address including whichever domain you picked. The external-application password rule applies the same way to all of them.
