WEB.DE SMTP, IMAP and POP3 settings
WEB.DE is a free German mailbox operated by 1&1 Mail & Media. Its hostnames do not follow the pattern of its sister service GMX: outgoing mail goes to smtp.web.de rather than mail.web.de, and POP3 sits on pop3.web.de rather than pop.web.de. External access stays off until you enable it, and WEB.DE switches it off again if the program goes unused.
For incoming mail, use the IMAP server imap.web.de on port 993, or POP3 at pop3.web.de on port 995. Pick the exact values from the tool above and copy them straight into your mail client.

Switch on POP3 and IMAP in the mailbox
Log in at www.web.de, click the icon with your initials in the top menu bar, open E-Mail-Einstellungen, pick POP3/IMAP under E-Mail empfangen and move the slider to 'POP3- und IMAP-Zugriff erlauben'.

Create an application-specific password
Log in on the WEB.DE website, click the icon with your initials and choose Account verwalten (this opens account.web.de). Click Login & Sicherheit, scroll down to Anwendungsspezifische Passwörter verwalten, then Neues Anwendungsspezifisches Passwort erstellen. WEB.DE displays it once, so write it down before you close the window.

Enter the incoming server
IMAP is imap.web.de on port 993 with SSL, or POP3 is pop3.web.de on port 995 with SSL. If 993 is blocked on your network, port 143 works for IMAP once you turn STARTTLS on.

SMTP is smtp.web.de on port 587 with STARTTLS, or port 465 with SSL. Switch on authentication for the outgoing server.

Which port should you use for WEB.DE?
STARTTLS on 587 (recommended) or SSL/TLS on 465. WEB.DE rejects unencrypted connections.
STARTTLS
Starts as a plain connection, then upgrades to an encrypted one. The modern standard for sending.
SSL/TLS
Encrypted from the first byte. Widely supported and a good choice when 587 is blocked.
Plain SMTP
Meant for server-to-server relay. Home networks and cloud hosts block it, so do not use it to send from a client.
Why your WEB.DE connection is failing
The failures people actually hit with WEB.DE, and what fixes each one.
WEB.DE refuses to relay a message whose From address does not belong to your WEB.DE mailbox, because that pattern gets its servers blocklisted. Open the outgoing server settings in the client and set the sender to your WEB.DE address.
WEB.DE automatically turns POP3/IMAP off again when a client has gone unused for a longer period. Log in at web.de and re-enable 'POP3- und IMAP-Zugriff erlauben'.
2FA blocks logins from external applications. Create an application-specific password from Account verwalten, Login & Sicherheit, re-activate POP3/IMAP in the mailbox settings, and log the client in again with that password.
WEB.DE allows POP3/IMAP from all countries outside Europe, the USA and Canada only with an application-specific password. Create one before travelling and enter it in the client.
Automatic setup usually runs before POP3/IMAP has been enabled and leaves half-finished settings behind. WEB.DE's advice is to delete an account that was set up automatically and add it again manually with the server names, ports and encryption typed in. Its help page gives this generically, not for any one mail program.

WEB.DE states that a per-message recipient cap exists but describes it only as 'very high' and adjusted as needed by its spam protection team, and gives no daily or hourly number.

No. WEB.DE's own help centre lists smtp.web.de as the outgoing server. The confusion comes from its sister service GMX, which uses mail.gmx.net, so guides that copy GMX settings across land on a hostname WEB.DE does not document. The incoming names differ the same way: pop3.web.de at WEB.DE, pop.gmx.net at GMX.
Does the free WEB.DE tariff include IMAP?
Yes. WEB.DE documents the same IMAP, POP3 and SMTP servers for FreeMail as for its paid tiers, and the on/off switch is in the free mailbox settings. Club and MailPlus raise the attachment ceiling from 20 MB to 100 MB, but they do not unlock the protocols.
My WEB.DE account works in the browser but the mail app on my phone was locked out. Why?
The two use different doors. The browser login accepts your mailbox password, while POP3 and IMAP have their own server-side switch that WEB.DE can turn off after long inactivity, after a security block, or when you enable two-factor authentication. Re-enable POP3/IMAP in the settings and, if 2FA is on, create an application-specific password for the app.
