Yandex Mail SMTP, IMAP and POP3 settings

Yandex Mail is the mail service of the Russian search company Yandex, offered free and as part of the paid Yandex 360 bundle. Its setup guide gives a second incoming hostname, imap.ya.ru, for people outside Russia. Yandex tells you to switch on IMAP and app passwords under Email clients in the web settings before a client will connect, and its outgoing limit is counted in recipients, 500 in any 24 hours.

For incoming mail, use the IMAP server imap.yandex.com on port 993, or POP3 at pop.yandex.com on port 995. Pick the exact values from the tool above and copy them straight into your mail client.

Checked against Yandex Mail's own documentation: yandex.com. Ports and limits change, so check there too if something will not connect.

What to enter as your Yandex Mail username and password

Wrong credentials, not a wrong port, are the usual reason a Yandex Mail connection fails. These are the exact values to type.

Username

For an address like username@yandex.com, the part before the @ sign, for example bob for bob@yandex.com

Password

An app password created for the email client app type, not your Yandex ID password. Yandex says it becomes active 2 to 3 hours after you create it.

How to set up Yandex Mail in a mail client

The exact path through Yandex Mail's own settings, in order.

  1. 1

Switch on IMAP in Yandex Mail settings

Open Email clients in Yandex Mail settings at https://mail.yandex.com/#setup/client and enable 'Use a mail client to retrieve your Yandex mail' followed by 'From the imap.yandex.com server via IMAP'.

  2. 2

Tick 'App passwords and OAuth tokens'

On the same Email clients page, turn on the 'App passwords and OAuth tokens' option. Yandex lists this as a prerequisite before any client will be let in.

  3. 3

Create an app password for an email client

Open the Safety tab at https://id.yandex.com/security, go to 'Access to your data' and select 'App passwords', then pick the email client app type (Windows, macOS, Android or iOS email client). Yandex shows the password once and says it becomes active in 2 to 3 hours.

  4. 4

Enter the server settings in your client

Incoming: imap.yandex.com port 993 with SSL, or imap.ya.ru if you are not in Russia. Outgoing: smtp.yandex.com port 465 with SSL, or port 587 if your client opens the connection without encryption.

  5. 5

Send one message from the web interface first

Yandex documents sending a test message from the Yandex Mail website so the system can see you are not a robot. This clears the 'Message rejected under suspicion of SPAM' block on a fresh account.

Thunderbird SMTP Server settings for Yandex Mail: server name smtp.yandex.com, port 465, connection security SSL/TLS, authentication method normal password.

Which port should you use for Yandex Mail?

SSL/TLS on 465 (recommended) or STARTTLS on 587.

587

STARTTLS

Starts as a plain connection, then upgrades to an encrypted one. The modern standard for sending.

465Recommended

SSL/TLS

Encrypted from the first byte. Widely supported and a good choice when 587 is blocked.

25Not supported

Plain SMTP

Meant for server-to-server relay. Home networks and cloud hosts block it, so do not use it to send from a client.

Why your Yandex Mail connection is failing

The failures people actually hit with Yandex Mail, and what fixes each one.

Sender address rejected: not owned by auth user

Yandex says this means the address in the From field does not match the address the client authenticates with. Set From to the same mailbox, or log the client in under the address you actually want to send as.

Message rejected under suspicion of SPAM

Send a message from the Yandex Mail web interface once, which is how Yandex confirms an account is not a robot, then retry the send from your client.

Authentication required, Sender address rejected: Access denied, or Send auth command first when sending

Yandex says SMTP authorization is disabled in the client. Turn on the option that makes the outgoing server require authentication and give it the same login and app password used for incoming mail.

No connection with server, even though the same login works on the Yandex Mail website

Open Email clients in Yandex Mail settings, switch on IMAP access and 'App passwords and OAuth tokens', then sign the client in with an app password instead of your Yandex ID password.

Folders created inside Inbox from the client will not move or stop syncing

Yandex warns that a subfolder created inside Inbox from a mail client causes issues when you move or modify folders, and says to place it one level above, next to Inbox.

Yandex Mail sending limits

Limits count recipients in the To, Cc and Bcc fields. A block clears automatically after 24 hours if you stop trying to send, otherwise it is extended another 24 hours, and Yandex lowers the limits further if its anti-spam sees mass mailing of similar or promotional messages.

Per day

500 recipients in any 24-hour period, counted as recipients rather than messages

Recipients per message

35 in one email sent from a mail client or over SMTP and 50 from the site, per Yandex's 'I can't send emails' page; Yandex's 'Sending a large number of messages' page gives 300 from a client and 1,000 from the site for the same service, so treat 35 as the safe floor

Max attachment

Attachments over 25 MB are uploaded to Yandex Disk automatically and arrive as links; the maximum attachment size is 1 GB without a Yandex 360 plan, and a file added from Yandex Disk can be up to 10 GB

Yandex Mail quirks by mail client

Outlook

Yandex's Outlook guide says to synchronise the new account with the server to pull the folder list, then in Other settings > Sent set 'Save the sent items in the following folder on the server' to the server's Sent folder.

other

Yandex states it cannot guarantee correct interaction with a client over POP3 because the developers no longer work on updates for that protocol.

Sending cold email through Yandex Mail

About 500 recipients per day on personal accounts. Turn on IMAP (or POP3) access in Yandex Mail settings first, then authenticate with an app password.

Those caps make single-mailbox sending fine for personal mail but a poor fit for cold outreach at volume. Emailchaser spreads sending across warmed inboxes and manages deliverability, so you can scale without burning Yandex Mail accounts.

Other consumer email providers

Setting up more than one mailbox? These sit in the same category as Yandex Mail.

Common questions about Yandex Mail SMTP settings

What are Yandex Mail's SMTP settings?

Yandex Mail's outgoing (SMTP) server is smtp.yandex.com. Use port 587 (STARTTLS) or 465 (SSL/TLS). SSL/TLS on 465 (recommended) or STARTTLS on 587. Sign in with your full email address and password (or app password).

What is Yandex Mail's IMAP or POP3 server?

Yandex Mail's incoming IMAP server is imap.yandex.com on port 993 (SSL/TLS). If you prefer POP3, use pop.yandex.com on port 995.

Which port should I use for Yandex Mail?

Use port 587 with STARTTLS wherever it's offered, it's the modern standard for authenticated sending. Port 465 with SSL/TLS is a solid alternative. Avoid port 25, which most networks block for client sending. Yandex Mail's recommended value is above.

Why won't my Yandex Mail SMTP connection work?

Check authentication first: Turn on IMAP (or POP3) access in Yandex Mail settings first, then authenticate with an app password. Create one under Yandex ID > Security > App passwords. It is mandatory when two-factor auth is on. Then confirm the host, port and security method match exactly, a 587/SSL or 465/STARTTLS mismatch will fail to connect.

Can I send bulk or cold email through Yandex Mail?

Not at scale. About 500 recipients per day on personal accounts. Providers throttle bursts to fight spam, so pushing cold email through one mailbox hits limits and wrecks deliverability. High-volume outreach belongs on dedicated infrastructure that spreads sending across warmed inboxes, which is what Emailchaser does.

Should I use imap.yandex.com or imap.ya.ru?

Yandex's own setup guides give imap.yandex.com and add 'or imap.ya.ru if you're not in Russia'. Both are documented for incoming mail on port 993 with SSL. The outgoing server stays smtp.yandex.com on port 465 either way, with no ya.ru alternative documented. If one hostname is unreachable from your network, try the other.

Can I still collect Yandex mail over POP3?

Yandex advises against it. Its help says it cannot guarantee correct interaction with your email client over a POP3 connection because the developers no longer work on updates for the protocol. POP3 also does not sync deleted messages or sent mail back to the server. Use IMAP unless a device forces POP3 on you.

Why is my Yandex password rejected in the mail client when it works on the website?

Three things gate it. Under Email clients in Yandex Mail settings you have to switch on IMAP access and the 'App passwords and OAuth tokens' option. Then create an app password for the email client type at id.yandex.com/security and type that into the client instead of your Yandex ID password. Yandex says the new password only becomes active after 2 to 3 hours, and it is displayed only once, so if you lose it, delete it and generate a new one.
