BT Mail is the email that comes with BT Broadband in the UK, covering @btinternet.com and @btopenworld.com addresses. One hostname, mail.btinternet.com, handles incoming and outgoing mail alike, with only the port changing. The catch most people hit is what happens when they leave: once BT Broadband ends you get 60 days to move to Premium email at 7.50 pounds a month, or every address on the BT ID is deleted.
For incoming mail, use the IMAP server mail.btinternet.com on port 993, or POP3 at mail.btinternet.com on port 995. Pick the exact values from the tool above and copy them straight into your mail client.

Pick manual IMAP setup in your mail app
BT publishes the settings at bt.com/help/email/manage-email-account/manual-settings. BT recommends IMAP so a copy of every message stays on its server.
Set incoming to mail.btinternet.com, port 993
Turn encryption on and choose SSL/TLS. BT's settings page says encryption must be enabled but not STARTTLS. For POP instead, the same hostname on port 995.
Set outgoing to mail.btinternet.com, port 465
Same hostname as incoming, SSL/TLS on. BT's email security page also lists port 587 as acceptable if your app will not accept 465.
Tick 'My server requires authentication'
BT requires every sent email to be authenticated and returns error 530 if it is not. The tickbox sits in your app's outgoing server settings. BT also says do not enable secure password authentication (SPA); the authentication method it lists is PLAIN.

Starts as a plain connection, then upgrades to an encrypted one. The modern standard for sending.
SSL/TLS
Encrypted from the first byte. Widely supported and a good choice when 587 is blocked.
Plain SMTP
Meant for server-to-server relay. Home networks and cloud hosts block it, so do not use it to send from a client.

SMTP authentication is off. Tick 'My server requires authentication' in the outgoing server settings, because BT requires all sent mail to be authenticated.
BT's own settings page says encryption should be enabled but not STARTTLS. Switch the app to SSL/TLS on 993 for IMAP and 465 for SMTP.
You have hit BT's send limit. Break the list into smaller groups and spread the sends over a longer period.
BT has flagged the network you are connecting from. Change your password straight away and reconnect over a different, more trusted connection.
BT gives you 60 days after broadband ends to take Premium email at 7.50 pounds a month via My BT. Do nothing and BT moves you to Basic email, and after 60 days every address on that BT ID is deleted.

Set Connection security to SSL/TLS on both 993 and 465, because BT's settings page explicitly rules out STARTTLS.

What are BT Internet's SMTP settings?
BT Internet's outgoing (SMTP) server is mail.btinternet.com. Use port 587 (STARTTLS) or 465 (SSL/TLS). SSL/TLS on 465 (recommended) or STARTTLS on 587. Sign in with your full email address and password (or app password).
What is BT Internet's IMAP or POP3 server?
BT Internet's incoming IMAP server is mail.btinternet.com on port 993 (SSL/TLS). If you prefer POP3, use mail.btinternet.com on port 995.
Which port should I use for BT Internet?
Use port 587 with STARTTLS wherever it's offered, it's the modern standard for authenticated sending. Port 465 with SSL/TLS is a solid alternative. Avoid port 25, which most networks block for client sending. BT Internet's recommended value is above.
Why won't my BT Internet SMTP connection work?
Check authentication first: Sign in with your full BT email address and your BT Mail password, with outgoing authentication switched on. If two-step authentication is on your BT ID, create an app password in your BT account security settings. Then confirm the host, port and security method match exactly, a 587/SSL or 465/STARTTLS mismatch will fail to connect.
Can I send bulk or cold email through BT Internet?
Not at scale. Per-account daily caps apply. Providers throttle bursts to fight spam, so pushing cold email through one mailbox hits limits and wrecks deliverability. High-volume outreach belongs on dedicated infrastructure that spreads sending across warmed inboxes, which is what Emailchaser does.
Why are the incoming and outgoing servers the same address?
BT runs everything through mail.btinternet.com. Only the port changes: 993 for IMAP, 995 for POP, 465 for SMTP. If a setup guide gives you a different hostname such as an old BT Yahoo one, it is out of date.
Do I need an app password for BT Mail?
BT's published settings ask for your email address and your normal email password, and no separate app password appears anywhere in BT's setup or security pages. If your app is rejected, the usual cause is missing SMTP authentication, SPA left switched on, or STARTTLS instead of SSL/TLS, not a missing app password.
Can I keep using Outlook with my BT address after I leave BT Broadband?
Only if you act inside 60 days. BT moves you to Basic email by default when broadband ends, and you have 60 days to choose Premium email at 7.50 pounds a month through My BT. After that window every address linked to the BT ID is deleted.
