Orange SMTP, IMAP and POP3 settings

Orange is the French telecoms operator, and its mailboxes carry @orange.fr or the older @wanadoo.fr addresses inherited from Wanadoo. Two Orange habits trip people up. New mailboxes have POP and IMAP switched off until you enable them in Mail Orange settings, and once you generate a dedicated password for outside mail software, Orange says there is no way back to your ordinary account password.

For incoming mail, use the IMAP server imap.orange.fr on port 993, or POP3 at pop.orange.fr on port 995. Pick the exact values from the tool above and copy them straight into your mail client.

Checked against Orange's own documentation: assistance.orange.fr. Ports and limits change, so check there too if something will not connect.

What to enter as your Orange username and password

Wrong credentials, not a wrong port, are the usual reason a Orange connection fails. These are the exact values to type.

Password

How to set up Orange in a mail client

The exact path through Orange's own settings, in order.

  1. 1

Switch POP and IMAP access on first

Orange disables both by default on newly created mailboxes for security reasons. Enable the access in your Mail Orange settings before you touch your mail app.

  2. 2

    Generate a dedicated password

In your Orange Espace client, go to Infos personnelles > Connexion et securite > Mot de passe pour logiciels et applications de messagerie tiers, and create a password used only for POP, IMAP and SMTP. Copy it immediately: Orange says that once generated it can never be displayed again.

  3. 3

    Set incoming to imap.orange.fr, port 993, SSL/TLS

Orange recommends IMAP. If you want POP instead it is pop.orange.fr on port 995, also SSL/TLS.

  4. 4

    Set outgoing to smtp.orange.fr, port 465, SSL/TLS

Tick the option saying your outgoing SMTP server requires authentication. Orange's settings page lists 465 only, so change any app that defaults to 587.

  5. 5

Sign in with the full address

Username is the whole address with @orange.fr or @wanadoo.fr included, paired with the dedicated password rather than your Orange account password.

Which port should you use for Orange?

SSL/TLS on 465 (recommended) or STARTTLS on 587. Port 25 is blocked.

587

STARTTLS

Starts as a plain connection, then upgrades to an encrypted one. The modern standard for sending.

465Recommended

SSL/TLS

Encrypted from the first byte. Widely supported and a good choice when 587 is blocked.

25Not supported

Plain SMTP

Meant for server-to-server relay. Home networks and cloud hosts block it, so do not use it to send from a client.

Why your Orange connection is failing

The failures people actually hit with Orange, and what fixes each one.

A brand new @orange.fr mailbox refuses every IMAP login even with the right password

Orange disables POP and IMAP by default on newly created mailboxes. Open your Mail Orange settings and turn the access on, then retry the app.

Your Orange account password stops working in Outlook or Thunderbird after you create a dedicated one

That is intended. Orange states plainly that once a dedicated password is generated there is no going back and no reusing your Orange account password, so you must keep using the dedicated one in mail software.

Receiving works but sending fails behind a Livebox

The Livebox firewall at its high setting blocks secure SSL sending. Orange gives two fixes: drop the firewall to medium, or create a custom rule allowing connections on TCP port 465.

The app repeatedly shows 'mettez a jour le mot de passe pour ce compte'

Orange lists this among its mail errors and points you back at its setup guide to reconfigure the mailbox. In practice that means re-entering your dedicated password, or generating a new one if you no longer have it.

After cancelling your Orange contract the mailbox vanishes from orange.fr

Orange keeps the mailbox for 6 months after cancellation. On a mobile contract it is reachable only from a mail app or client, not the orange.fr portal or the Mail Orange app, and the password cannot be reset from the day of cancellation, so save it first.

Orange sending limits

Orange publishes no per hour or per day sending figures; only the message size ceiling is stated.

25 MB per email, 30 MB with the Gigamail option

Sending cold email through Orange

Per-account daily caps apply. Sign in with your full Orange address and your email password, which may differ from your Orange account password.

Those caps make single-mailbox sending fine for personal mail but a poor fit for cold outreach at volume. Emailchaser spreads sending across warmed inboxes and manages deliverability, so you can scale without burning Orange accounts.

Common questions about Orange SMTP settings

What are Orange's SMTP settings?

Orange's outgoing (SMTP) server is smtp.orange.fr. Use port 587 (STARTTLS) or 465 (SSL/TLS). SSL/TLS on 465 (recommended) or STARTTLS on 587. Port 25 is blocked. Sign in with your full email address and password (or app password).

What is Orange's IMAP or POP3 server?

Orange's incoming IMAP server is imap.orange.fr on port 993 (SSL/TLS). If you prefer POP3, use pop.orange.fr on port 995.

Which port should I use for Orange?

Use port 587 with STARTTLS wherever it's offered, it's the modern standard for authenticated sending. Port 465 with SSL/TLS is a solid alternative. Avoid port 25, which most networks block for client sending. Orange's recommended value is above.

Why won't my Orange SMTP connection work?

Check authentication first: Sign in with your full Orange address and your email password, which may differ from your Orange account password. No app password. Set or reset the mail password in your Orange espace client. Then confirm the host, port and security method match exactly, a 587/SSL or 465/STARTTLS mismatch will fail to connect.

Can I send bulk or cold email through Orange?

Not at scale. Per-account daily caps apply. Providers throttle bursts to fight spam, so pushing cold email through one mailbox hits limits and wrecks deliverability. High-volume outreach belongs on dedicated infrastructure that spreads sending across warmed inboxes, which is what Emailchaser does.

My address ends in @wanadoo.fr. Do I need different servers?

No. Orange's settings page covers @orange.fr and @wanadoo.fr together, so both use imap.orange.fr, pop.orange.fr and smtp.orange.fr. Type the address in full, including the @wanadoo.fr part, as the username.

Is the dedicated password optional?

Orange presents it as a recommendation, because a password generated only for POP, IMAP and SMTP is less use to an attacker than your main one. In practice it becomes compulsory as soon as you make one: Orange states that you cannot go back and reuse your Orange account password afterwards.

I cancelled my Orange offer. How long can I still collect my mail?

Six months. During that window an internet contract mailbox stays reachable from the orange.fr portal and from mail apps, but a mobile contract mailbox can only be reached from a mail app or client. Orange also warns that you cannot reset the password from the day the line is cancelled, so store it before you cancel.
